Locals set to compete in state tournament

Wallkill High’s Mike Fekishazy is the only one of 15 area athletes that is seeded as the New York State Public High School Athletic Associatio­n’s wrestling tournament begins today at the Times Union Center in Albany.

Preliminar­ies for Division 1 (large school) and Division 2 (small school) is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Quarerfina­ls are scheduled to commence at 2 p.m. with two sessions of wrestlebac­ks at 4 and 6 p.m.

Action resumes on Saturday with semifinals and wrestlebac­ks at 10 a.m., consolatio­n semifinals at 12:30 p.m. and consolatio­n finals at 2. The championsh­ips are slated to start at 6:30 p.m.

Feikishazy (37-2), who placed sixth at states last year at D-I 170 pounds, is seeded third at 182. He fill face TJ Toles of Chaminade in the first round.

There were two local medalists in 2016. The other was New Paltz’s Theo Chazkel, who was sixth at D-2 182. The top six all medal.

Also competing in Division I are Wallkill’s Brad Bonner and Andrew Davis, who earned at-large bids, and Saugerties’ Colby Amell.

Bonner (40-8) will take on fifth-seeded Matt Maquet of Long Beach at 132, while Davis (44-6) encounters second-seeded Austin Hertle of Hilton at 126 and Amell (30-6) faces eighthseed Myles Griffin of Jamesville Dewitt at 99.

There are 11 area athletes from from schools in the Division 2 bracket, including five from Onteora, three from Rondout Valley, plus one each from Highland, Red Hook and New Paltz.

They all will wrestle seeded foes in their opening rounds.

Five of them tackle No. 2 seeds. Rondout’s Nikko Walsh (24-7) takes on Mason Bush of Central Valley Academy at 99 pounds, while Onteora’s Pat Ross (24-9) faces Maple Hill’s Trent Svingala at 106, brother Dillon Ross (31-6) takes on Ross McFarland of Phoenix at 152, Highland’s Matt Malherio (35-10) meets Peru’s Colin Hogan at 138, and Ben Cuppett (19-7) of New Paltz is scheduled to face Canastota’s Doug Simons at 182. Two other Ross brothers will represent Onteora.

Nick Ross (27-9) will fight fourth-seeded Caleb Robinson of Walton-Delhi at 113, while Nate Ross (19-6) squares off with No. 3 Jack Bokina of Mattituck at 126.

Also competing this weekend is Rondout’s Ian Houck (26-7) against No. 5 Riley Camden at 132, Zach Chartrand (25-10) of Onteora versus fifth-seeded Daylon Swearingen of Attica-Batavia at 145, Red Hook’s Jeffrey Kiluba (256) and No. 6 Trevor Snow of Generald Brown at 170, and Rondout’s William Sutherland (22-11) taking on eighth-seeded Lucas Sanders of Glens Falls at 285.
