Kingston High closed out its girls basketball regular season with the Tigers’ sixth win in seven games Wednesday, pulling out a 54-52 victory over Cornwall.
Nicole Spinelli hit a 3-point field goal off an designed inbounds play in the final minute to erase Cornwall’s 50-49 lead and give Kingston its winning margin.
The (14-5) Green Dragons had a last chance to tie or win with seven seconds left, but the shot failed and Jaid Harrell rebounded to secure the Tigers’ win.
Spinelli and Chloe Chaffin each had 12 points, Grace Regan and Ashley Cook scored nine apiece and Harrell scored seven for Kingston. Lanasia Dorsey, who appeared to hurt her back in a game last week, was back in action and scored five points.
Cook hit three 3-pointers during Kingston’s 20-point second quarter that erased Cornwall’s early 10-point advantage.
“This was a good one to pull out, a good road win,” said Kingston coach Steve Garner, whose team has gone from 5-8 to 11-9 heading into the Section 9 tournament.
“They really keyed on Chloe. They jammed the lane. It was really tough going in,” Garner noted. “Chloe played well. She passed the ball well.
“We missed a ton of layups or she would have had more assists.” KINGSTON (54)—Spinelli 4 2-2 12, Regan 4 1-2 9, Dorsey 1 3-4 5, Cook 3 0-0 9, Chaffin 5 1-2 12, Harrell 3 1-4 7. Totals 20 8-14 54.
