Hyde Park man, 42, dies af­ter stab­bing

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. » A 42-year-old Hyde Park man was fa­tally stabbed dur­ing an al­ter­ca­tion with a group of teens in Poughkeepsie, city po­lice said Fri­day.

Nakia Bur­ton was stabbed once in the chest and died Thurs­day evening at Vas­sar Broth­ers Med­i­cal Cen­ter, po­lice said.

No ar­rest was an­nounced as of 5 p.m. Fri­day.

Po­lice said the stab­bing hap­pened on Smith Street in the area of Har­ri­son Street. They said Bur­ton was a pas­sen­ger in a ve­hi­cle when a group of males be­tween the ages of 15 and 18 years of age crossed the street in front of the ve­hi­cle. Word then were ex­changed be­tween Bur­ton and the group, to po­lice said.

As Bur­ton be­gan to get out of the car, a sub­ject de­scribed as a black male be­tween 15 and 18 years old, of medium build and wear­ing a white T-shirt ran up to him and stabbed him in the chest, po­lice said. Peo­ple in the group then ran off, they said.

Bur­ton fell back into the car and was driven to the emer­gency room at Vas­sar Broth­ers, where he later died, po­lice said.

Po­lice said the hos­pi­tal called Dutchess County 911 about the stab­bing at 5:59 p.m.
