Onteora, Marlboro earn shutout victories
Tomas Pesko West’s goal off an assist from Cooper Anderson in the 20th minute made the difference as Onteora High beat Ellenville 1-0 in a Mid-Hudson Athletic League boys soccer match on Friday.
Devils head coach Maxwell Mead said after conceding that goal his squad came to life, but couldn’t capitalize on an 8-3 edge in shots in the second half that included an opportunity to score the equalizer in the 78th minute go wide.
“The first half we saw a lot of the ball, but settled for shots from distance,” Mead said. “We made some changes in the second half and got into some good areas but we couldn’t find the final touch.
“Onteora defended as a unit, and were really motivated to win this game.”
Ellenville finished the match with a 16-7 edge on shots. Cole Whitehead had seven saves to preserve the shutout for (3-3, 1-2) Onteora, while Daniel Mahany registered two saves for (3-3, 1-2) Ellenville. Marlboro 2, Rondout 0
At Marlboro, Walter Espinoza scored both goals to lead the (3-4 overall, 2-3 MHAL) Dukes.
Matt Earley and Klaus Sulollar had assists, while Jawad Haidaoui made five saves to preserve the shutout.
Erik Bogart, meanwhile, stopped 10 shots in the loss for the Ganders.
