Volunteers plant trees, shrubs along stream

ROSENDALE, N.Y. » The Town Board is lauding volunteer efforts to stem the effects of climate change by planting 47 trees and 70 shrubs along a stream bank near the Rosendale Community Center.

At a Town Board meeting last week, Councilman Chris Pryslopski said the plantings were funded by the independent Trees for Tribs program.

“The Environmental Commission did plant ... a variety,” he said. “We have some sycamore, we also have red buds, some dogwoods. So there will be some ornamental trees and lots of bushes, and we also planted pussy willow all the way at the bottom.”

Fifteen volunteers participated in the planting. Pryslopski said tasks were assigned to accommodate even modest skill sets.

“They gave me a hammer and some rebar to put into the ground,” he said.

“There were some volunteers from the community that came in,” Pryslopski said. “There were some Town Board members, but the bulk were Rosendale Environmental Commission members.”

Pryslopski said the planting was in a 5,500-squarefoot area near a tributary that runs behind the recreation center. “There’s a little brook there that generations ago they diverted to feed initially a pool,” he said.

The program is overseen by the state Department of Environmental Conservation. Bareroot trees and shrubs are provided by the Saratoga State Tree Nursery, which was established in 1911 to provide vegetation for reforesting projects.

“Trees for Tribs focuses on comprehensive watershed restoration designed to protect green infrastructure and serves as the first line of defense against storm and flooding events, protecting property, water quality, and fish and wildlife habitat,” the state agency says. “In addition to planting trees, the program also promotes best management practices for communities and encourages new programs, policies and investments in tributary protection.”
