Recent mass killings result in new name for mascot
TOWN OF POUGHKEEPSIE,
N.Y. » Mass shootings across the nation have prompted Marist College to drop “Shooter” as the nickname for its sports mascot.
Marist decided to come up with a new name for the costumed mascot for its Red Foxes men’s and women’s basketball teams after last month’s mass murder at a country music concert in Las Vegas.
That attack was followed not too long after by a mass killing of worshippers at a Texas church.
Marist’s athletics department settled on a new nickname of Frankie, a nod to President Franklin D. Roosevelt, who was born in Hyde Park, just north of the town of Poughkeepsie school.
Marist debuted the new nickname during last weekend’s season-opening games for both basketball teams.
The mascot’s “Shooter” nickname was used for years and referred to shooting baskets, not guns.
