Clear­wa­ter to honor ex-re­gional EPA chief

BEA­CON, N.Y. » Hud­son River Sloop Clear­wa­ter will honor for­mer U.S. En­vi­ron­men­tal Pro­tec­tion Agency Re­gional Ad­min­is­tra­tor Ju­dith Enck at the or­ga­ni­za­tion’s third an­nual Spirit of the Hud­son gala.

Enck will be given Clear­wa­ter’s “Spirit of the Hud­son Award” for her long­time ser­vice to the en­vi­ron­ment. She was ap­pointed by Pres­i­dent Barack Obama in 2009 and served for seven years as ad­min­is­tra­tor of EPA Re­gion 2, which in­cludes New York state, New Jer­sey, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Vir­gin Is­lands.

As a col­lege stu­dent, the first is­sue Enck worked on was New York’s “bot­tle bill.” She also was in­stru­men­tal in man­ag­ing the cleanup of PCBs in the Hud­son River and was pres­i­dent of the Clear­wa­ter Board of Di­rec­tors and served on the board from 1987 to 1990.
