KINGSTON, N.Y. >> Republican incumbent George Amedore easily defeated Democratic challenger Pat Courtney Strong on Tuesday to win re-election in New York’s 46th Senate District.

With all precincts reporting, Amedore received 64,051 votes to Strong’s 49,124, according to state Board of Election data.

The 46th District includes part of Ulster County, all of Greene and Montgomery counties, and part of Albany and Schenectady counties. In Ulster County, the district includes the city of Kingston and the towns of Saugerties, Woodstock, Hurley, Kingston, Ulster, Marbletown, Esopus and Lloyd.

“I want to thank the voters of the 46th Senate District for giving me the opportunity to continue to serve as their senator,” Amedore said in a statement after the polls closed. “It has been a great honor to serve, and I’m proud of all that we have accomplished together. I’m excited to get back to work and continue my efforts to make New York more affordable and improve the quality of life in all of our communities.”

Amedore, 49, won his third two-year term in the Senate. He previously served in the state Assembly from 2007 through 2012.

The Rotterdam resident is the second-generation owner of Amedore Homes, a home-building company. He is married and has three adult children.

Prior to the election, Amedore said issues that deserve priority in the district include education funding, the property tax burden, developing a skilled workforce and continuing to address the opioid epidemic.

“The property tax burden is crushing our families, seniors and small businesses,” Amedore had said. “While the [property] tax cap has been successful, we need to couple it with significant mandate relief to reduce the crushing tax burden.”
