Chenier, Bucci win Section 9 titles

Kingston High’s Jacob Chenier and Matt Bucci of Saugerties both won Section 9, Division 1 wrestling championsh­ips Saturday night, securing trips to the state tournament.

Bucci, a senior, captured the 170-pound title. Chenier, a junior, took the 113 crown. Both placed third last year.

The duo assured themselves a berth in the New York State Public High School Athletic Associatio­n tourney Feb. 22-23 at the Times Union Center in Albany.

Chenier claimed Kingston’s first sectional championsh­ip in six years with an 8-0 decision over Minisink Valley’s Joe Habert. Bucci stopped Valley Central’s Pat Satriano 8-6 for his title.

The Tigers and Sawyers placed two in the finals. Saugerties’ topseeded senior Colby Amell lost the 99-pound title on an injury default to Washington­ville’s Andrew Marchese. Kingston senior Hayden Barley scored a big 1-0 victory over second-seeded Carsen Henry of Minisink in the 195 semifinals, but was pinned by Monroe-Woodbury’s Sam Santander in the finals.

New Paltz sophomore Ethan Palanca also reached the finals, but lost the 138 match to Minisink’s Sean Savacool.

The Huguenots had five other members place: Devin Dixon (220) took fourth, while Aidan Cuppett (132) and Levi Wyns (145) were fifth and Elliot Crocco (113) and Logan Michael (152) finished sixth.

Kingston’s Gavin Richter was

fourth at 126. Fellow Tigers Myles Gordon (145), Zavier Bennet (182) and Stephon Holmes (220) were all sixth.

Jimmy Heinlein placed third at 138 with a pin in the consolatio­n final and Robert Drost took fifth at 113 for Saugerties. Wallkill’s Justin Lyle was fourth at 170.
