Downingtown East golfers set record in victory
The Downingtown East girls’ golf team defeated Methacton, 171-185, Monday, shooting the lowest team score in the history of the program. East was led by Liddie McCook (36), Anisha Sonti (43), Megan Ostertag (43) and Katelyn Samples (49). McCook and Samples each birdied the ninth hole, and McCook hit all nine greens in regulation. Even though the greens had been aerated Monday morning, scores were still low.
The victory, at Honeybrook Golf Club (9 holes, par 35), boosted East’s record to 3-2 (2-2 in PAC). OXFORD 211, COATESVILLE 217 >> Chuck Sisler shot a 35 and Nick Rubbo added a 39 as the Hornets (2-2, 5-4) recorded the Ches-Mont victory. Jake Tury led the Red Raiders with a 38.
BISHOP SHANAHAN 205, AVON GROVE 215 >> Joe Juliano led with a 39 and Pat Nulty added a 40 as the Eagles captured the Ches-Mont National victory.
Matt Chalupa and Jack McCarthy shot a 41 each to pace the Red Devils (3-3, 6-4).
MALVERN PREP 237, HAVERFORD SCHOOL 239 >> Friar sophomore John Updike shot a sizzling 3-under par score of 33 with five birdies to earn medalist honors. Malvern junior Mattt Davis chipped in with 38 and continued his consistent play this season. Friar senior Gavin Sims posted 40 while sophomore Andrew Curran shot 41. Malvern is now 4-0 in non-league action.
GREAT VALLEY 204, KENNETT 219 >> Steve Borst led the way for the Patriots with a 36, while Evan Brown paced Kennett with a 37 Monday at Hartefeld GC.
GREAT VALLEY (GIRLS) 181, SPRING-FORD (GIRLS) 192 >> Great Valley was led by Liv Juliana (39) and Amanda Heins (44) in its victory Monday at Spring Hollow GC.
DEVON PREP 4, DELCO CHRISTIAN 2 >> The Tide rolled to a victory Monday, boosted by two goals from Nick Bello. Matt Drauschak and John Curran added goals for the winners.
GREAT VALLEY 5, BISHOP SHANAHAN 1 >> Great Valley (1-3) picked up its first win of the season, getting two goals each from Cassidy Hoops and Thea Howard.
WEST CHESTER RUSTIN 4, SUN VALLEY 0 >> Rustin got a hat trick from Audrey Coffey and three assists from Anushree Goddole. With the win, Goalie Nicole Cousens (three saves) got the shutout. Rustin improves to 3-2 over- all, 2-0 league.
OCTORARA 2, OXFORD 0 >> Octarara got goals from Kelsey Tuell and Lindsey Topper in the victory. 3-1 (2-0 league), getting goals from Julia Wood, Olivia Parke and Catherine Derosa. Goalie Sara Leirfrig (three saves) recorded the shutout.
CONESTOGA 1, COUNCIL ROCK SOUTH 0 >> The Pioneers’ goal was scored off of a corner kick in the first half by Nia Scott. The assist was by Emily Wertz, who took the kick. This improves Conestoga’s record to 3-0-1 having defeated Owen J. Roberts, Springfield (Delco), and Council Rock South, and having tied Downingtown West. Conestoga had an 11-4 shots-on-goal advantage. Conestoga’s keepers split the game with Colleen Baldwin making two saves in the first half, and Maeve Regan making one save in the second half.
DONWINGTOWN WEST 1, DOWNINGTOWN EAST 0 >> West got a second-half goal from Gina Peraino, and goalie Morgan O’Laughlin (two saves) recorded the shutout. For East, goalie Courtney Dunlop made two saves.
UNIONVILLE 4, GREAT VALLEY 3>> Unionville got key wins at second singles (Ricki Lane) and fourth doubles (Maddy French and Kate Dobbins) for the 4-3 win. Great Valley’s Adira Nair had a wellplayed match at first singles.
WEST CHESTER HENDERSON 7, KENNETT 0 >> Henderson swept Kennett, 7-0, Monday, winning all of its matches handily in two sets.
COATESVILLE 6, SUN VALLEY 1 >> Coatesville rolled to a convincing victory against visiting Sun Valey Monday, winning all matches except for first singles.
COATESVILLE 3, OXFORD 1 >> Coatesville won by posting scores of 25-19, 25-22, 1925, 25-23. Oxford leaders included Madeline Williams (four aces), Logan Wolfe (three aces, eight Kills, four blocks) and Julianna Huggard (five kills, three blocks). VILLA MARIA ACADEMY 3, GWYNEDD MERCY 1 >> The Hurricanes (1-1 overall, 1-0 AACA) picked up their first win of the season, posting scores of 18-25, 25-17, 26-24, 25-22. Villa Maria leaders included Shannon Thomas (28 assists, 12 digs, three aces), Erin Zimmerman (10 kills, three blocks) and Molly Dunfee (18 digs, three aces).
WEST CHESTER RUSTIN 2, SUN VALLEY 1 >> Rustin got goals from Katherine Heilman and Blaise Cubini in the victory, and improved to 3-2 with the win.
BISHOP SHANAHAN 6, BONNER PRENDIE 2 >> Bishop Shanahan (1-2) earned its first victory of the season, getting goals from six different scorers. Goalie Caressa Gentile had 12 saves.
The West Chester Henderson doubles team of Mary Elizabeth Soria and Elaina Rockford competes against Kennett Monday.
