Whippets hold on for wild volleyball win
The Downingtown West volleyball team thought it had done the hard part during Friday’s nonleague match against Spring-Ford, jumping out to a quick lead by winning the first two sets. But after dropping sets three and four, the Whippets had to scrap out a wild 16-14 win in the fifth set to beat the Rams, 25-23, 25-21, 18-25, 18-25, 16-14.
Kenzie Pincura had 21 kills, 10 digs and six aces to lead the Whippets, while Aly Reardon added 12 kills and five aces and Haley Lewis chipped in with 10 kills and seven blocks.
Gina Schetroma had 28 digs and four aces while Lexi Baldwin had 20 assists, four aces and eight digs. NOTRE DAME 3, WEST CHESTER EAST 0 >> Ali Ward had 10 kills and Taylor Crawford had 14 assists in the nonleague loss for the Vikings (4-2 overall). VILLA MARIA 3, ST. BASIL’S 0 >> Carly Ostrowski had 13 kills and 10 digs and Shannon Thomas added 35 assists as the Hurricanes (3-0, 3-2) swept the AACA match, 25-7, 25-18 and 25-12. Molly Dunfee added 12 digs and three asces while Emily Wynne had seven kills, seven digs and two aces.
UNIONVILLE 7, OCTORARA 0 >> Sophie Wilks, Ricki Lane and Eliza Wilks cruised to singles victories as the Indians blanked the Braves in the Ches-Mont American tilt, remaining perfect in the league this year (7-0). The third and fourth doubles matches were the most competitive of the day for the Braves (1-5 league), but Unionville was still able to finish off the shutout win. win without dropping a set. WEST CHESTER HENDERSON 7, BISHOP SHANAHAN 0 >> The Warriors dropped just seven games overall on their way to a shutout win over the Eagles in Ches-Mont National action. Emma Clark, Amanda Baxter and Hannah Baxter each win singles matches without losing a game. WEST CHESTER EAST 6, WEST CHESTER RUSTIN 1 >> The Vikings won a Ches-Mont crossover match that was closer than the final score would indicate, as the No. 2 singles match went three sets and No. 2 doubles match required a split-set tiebreaker. COATESVILLE 5, OXFORD 2 >> Jackie Domsohn, Sarah Kargbu and Siani Brown all posted easy singles wins as the Red Raiders won the Ches-Mont crossover match.
Amanda Cooper and Rachel Shelley posted a win for Oxford at third doubles.
4, Elyse Burch and Ainsley Vogt clinched the hard-fought match with a win at No. 4 doubles to edge the Patriots. Adira Nair pulled out a hard-fought three-set win over Noelle Eghbali at No. 1 singles. SPRINGSIDE-CHESTNUT HILL 2, WESTTOWN 1 >> After falling behind early, Abbie Barth scored the only goal for the Moose (1-2 overall) before Springside-Chestnut Hill went ahead for good in the nonleague contest. BISHOP SHANAHAN 6, HAVERFORD 4 >> Emma Velez and Paige Plevyak scored two goals each as the Eagles jumped out to an early lead and hung on in a nonleague shootout. Alana Pappas had six saves for the Eagles (2-4 overall).
