Man rescued in quarry accident
Dump truck rolled 100 feet down embankment at the Glasgow Inc. Catanach Quarry
EAST WHITELAND >> An oversize industrial dump truck rolled 100 feet down an embankment at the Glasgow Inc. Catanach Quarry injuring the driver and requiring an extensive rescue effort to safely remove him Monday morning.
The truck was hauling dirt at the top of the quarry at 660 Morehall Road when it slid down the side of the quarry and came to rest 100 feet below, according to East Whiteland Fire Company Captain Greg Lewis.
Lewis said East Whiteland Fire company was dispatched at 7:45 a.m. along with Malvern medics and East Whiteland police. They found the driver of the truck with non-life threatening injuries, but he was unable to get safely off the wall because of the precarious position of the truck. Firefight-
ers requested the Chester County Rescue Task Force team to set up a rope rescue system to reach the driver and get him to safety.
Lewis said the task force provides important gear and crew for rope rescue incidents and the expertise to use the gear properly.
The task force consists of units from a number of stations across Chester County, including Berwyn, Kennett, Longwood, Wagontown, Thorndale, Downingtown, Fame-West Chester, Norco and Valley Forge fire companies.
The task force trains together regularly and respond with specialized equipment and crews trained for rope related rescues.
The task force was last called Sept. 5 to rescue an injured hiker along French Creek at Saint Peter’s Village in Warwick.
Heavy rain hampered operations. Water runoff in the dirt threatened to undermine the stabilization process, and a trench rescue task force was also requested. Crews from the quarry also dumped loads of rock to stabilize the soft quarry road.
Rescue crews requested two 360 degree swivel heavy duty crane tow trucks from Abel Brothers towing to assist in stabilizing the dump truck.
The rescue was complete by 10:38 a.m. and East Whiteland units cleared at 11:38 a.m.
“This was a first for me,” Lewis said. “It’s unique and the weather didn’t help things.”
