The Saint Agnes Scoop school newspaper, which completed its 9th year of publication in May 2016, was recently award a ranking of Superior by the National Elementary School Press Association as part of its National Review and Rating. This is the 9th consecutive year that the newspaper, advised by Noel Dolan, has achieved this rating. Noting this run, the judge said, “I want you to know how incredible it is that you not only keep achieving that rating, but that you never let it slide. Many teachers let things slip and new students and staffs come and go. You are really a powerhouse publication and [the advisor] and the staff should be so very proud.”

The judge commended last year’s 7th graders for stepping into leadership roles in the absence of any 8th grade staff. The judge also admired last year’s reporting by students living in Germany for the year. She wrote, “You might be the only elementary school paper I know of doing international reporting. This is fantastic. Kudos!” She further praised the staff’s editorial and pro/con writing for its examination of worldly issues and inclusion of both sides in an argument.

The judge said, “I loved the story about Catholic Schools Week. It was very informative and provided a lot of heart. Also, the fact that you contacted the Vatican media office speaks volumes about what you are teaching these young minds – how to professionally access high-profile public officials and public figures.”

The Scoop looks forward to its 10th year of reporting on our St. Agnes community.
