Board pays tribute to Patricia Lyons
PENN >> Near the close of their Sept. 22 meeting, the Avon Grove School Board members passed a resolution of tribute to the recently deceased board member Patricia Lyons.
Lyons passed away on Sept. 2 at the age of 64. A longtime resident of the area, she was a graduate of the Avon Grove school district, and served on the school board for more than 18 years.
“It’s just a real tragedy that we lost her at such a young age,” board President Bonnie Wolff said.
The board has 30 days to fill a vacancy, and so will be holding a public meeting at 6 p.m. Sept. 29 to interview candidates for the position and probably select a replacement for Lyons. Four applications have been received for the job.
The board also voted the intent to renew the contract of Christopher Marcese for an additional three to five years subject to reaching terms of a new employment contract. “I am very excited to continue to serve the district,” Marchese said.
Under facilities, the board voted to switch from oil heat to natural gas for the Avon Grove elementary schools campus. The district expects to see a savings of approximately $60,000 annually, roughly a one-third reduction in heating costs by making the change. There will be no upfront charge to the district for having the gas line installed for service, but there will be a cost to convert the heating system to gas. The district expects to see that cost recouped within two to three years.
