Cancer survivor walking 104 miles to raise awareness for screenings
WEST CHESTER >> And she’s off.
Breast cancer survivor Helen Michener, a graduate of the Chester County Hospital Nursing School, began her “Freedom from Breast Cancer: A Survivor’s Walk” on Monday.
On Tuesday, Michener’s walking journey brought her to Chester County Hospital.
Michener is a three-year breast cancer survivor and has turned her diagnosis into a dream of making a difference. She is walking across Pennsylvania to educate women on the importance of early detection for breast cancer.
Staying true to that mission, she stopped at Chester County Hospital to highlight the work of the PA Breast Cancer Coalition and Highmark’s “Nudge” Campaign.
The hospital set up Michener with a table outside of the hospital café so she could answer questions and share information about the support and work of the coalition as well as use Highmark’s “Nudge Kit” to gently remind people to get the cancer screenings that saved her life.
The hospital was eager to support Michener on her journey because of its own active involvement in the care of breast cancer patients, survivors and the community. The Abramson Cancer Center brings the latest advances in cancer treatment, support networks, clinical trials and consistency of care to Chester County. The hospital’s Community Health and Wellness services holds numerous events, information sessions and screenings throughout the county to raise awareness about the importance of early detection.
In addition to the advanced cancer treatment and health and wellness initiatives, The Chester County Hospital Foundation holds several fundraising events to support the Abramson Cancer Center at Chester County Hospital.
The 25th Annual Dilworthtown Inn Wine Festival will be held Oct. 9, from noon to 4 p.m. at the Dilworthtown Inn in West Chester.
Michener will cover 104 miles from the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia to the Capitol in Harrisburg.
She will be making additional stops in Newtown Square, Downingtown, Gap, Lancaster, Mount Joy and Middletown before crossing the finish line in Harrisburg on Oct. 9.
