‘American Housewife’ doesn’t offer anything new

Daily Local News (West Chester, PA) - - FIFTY PLUS - By Rob Lowman Southern California News Group

The ABC comedy “American Housewife” is as middling as it sounds.

It focuses on a wife and mother named Katie Otto — played by Katy Mixon (“Mike & Molly”) — and her family as they try to fit in with the wealthy town of Westport, Connecticut.

Westport is filled with beautiful people, and Katie quickly becomes obsessed with her weight, which we learn about way too often. Her neighbor is called “Fat Pam,” and the normal-sized Otto is worried about getting a similar nickname. The snarky housewives in the town, with their exercise regimens and diets, are already calling her “real.”

Nevertheless, her husband Greg (Diedrich Bader) is perfectly happy with his wife. So what does she have to worry about? Apparently, enough to make a series, but it’s hard to tell why.

On the positive side, Mixon and Bader are talented Diedrich Bader and Katy Mixon in “American Housewife.”
