Marolyn Elaine Johnson Hughes, 91, passed away peace­fully at home on October 7, 2016. She was sur­rounded by her lov­ing fam­ily.

Mrs. Hughes was born on Septem­ber 12, 1925 in Philadel­phia, PA. She was the el­dest of three chil­dren born to Mary Hud­son and Lewis Chester Johnson.

Mrs. Hughes grad­u­ated from Philadel­phia High School for Girls, an in­sti­tu­tion for the aca­dem­i­cally gifted. She at­tended Bryn Mawr Col­lege and the Univer­sity of Penn­syl­va­nia where she pur­sued her pas­sion for chem­istry.

In 1946, Marolyn Johnson mar­ried James J. Hughes Jr. and they were blessed with seven chil­dren.

A long-time res­i­dent of Chester County, Mrs. Hughes was also a sec­ond mother to many and will be re­mem­bered for her spir­i­tu­al­ity, kind­ness, cu­rios­ity, vo­ra­cious ap­petite for cur­rent af­fairs, avid read­ing, and ap­pre­ci­a­tion of the beauty that sur­rounded her. She will be sadly missed by fam­ily and friends who loved her dearly.

Mrs. Hughes was pre­ceded in death by her hus­band of 57 years, James J. Hughes, Jr.; her son, Bobby; her sis­ter, Nancy; and her brother, Robert.

She will be mourned by her by 11 grand­chil­dren, 10 great-grand­chil­dren, 3 great-great-grand­chil­dren, and most deeply by her six chil­dren: Michael of Lake Ridge, VA; Pa­tri­cia AvéLalle­mant of Sa­van­nah, GA; James (Alice King) of Charleston, SC; Kath­leen (Charles Ham­mond) of West Chester, PA; Teresa H. Hurst of Ex­ton, PA; and Thomas (Mary Beth) of Tampa, FL.

Mass of the Chris­tian Burial will take place at St. Agnes Catholic Church, 233 W. Gay Street, West Chester, PA, on Wed­nes­day, October 12, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. Friends and fam­ily may visit from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m.

In­ter­ment will be pri­vate.
