Fire de­stroys barn, in­jures fire­fighter

One fire­fighter was taken to the hos­pi­tal for treat­ment of in­juries sus­tained while bat­tling a fire that de­stroyed a town­ship barn Fri­day evening.

Fire de­part­ments were called to a barn fire on Weis­stown Road at around 8:30 p.m. Fri­day night. Upon ar­rival, East­ern Berks Fire Chief Mike Mut­ter con­firmed a work­ing fire with no im­me­di­ate ex­po­sures. A sec­ond alarm was then ini­ti­ated.

East­ern Berks Fire De­part­ment ar­rived on the scene and be­gan to douse the fire. Crews from other sta­tions soon ar­rived to pro­vide sup­port and most of the blaze had been knocked down.

The barn and a classic car in­side were com­pletely de­stroyed, fire of­fi­cials said.

One fire­fighter was taken to a lo­cal hos­pi­tal for treat­ment of un­spec­i­fied in­juries.

Crews did not com­pletely clear the scene un­til around 11 p.m.

Fire of­fi­cials have not yet de­ter­mined a cause of the fire.

As­sist­ing on the scene were East­ern Berks, Boy­er­town, Earl Town­ship, Hereford, Penns­burg, Gil­bertsville and New Hanover Fire De­part­ments, as well as EMS units from Bally and Boy­er­town.
