EAST CALN » Tracie Ullman comes by her love for holistic healing honestly: Her mother practiced Reiki when she was growing up.
Now, Ullman has taken that interest and expanded her business to the point where she has opened her own shop near Downingtown.
She and the Exton Region Chamber of Commerce recently celebrated the grand reopening of her business, SoulScapes Reiki Laser Skin Center, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony that also introduced her tenant, Hands Down Massage.
The opening marks a milestone for Ullman, who has a nursing degree, a Reiki mastership, is a licensed cosmetologist and medical esthetician, and is a graduate from the Institute of Laser Medicine.
“It was evident throughout the evening that Tracie’s collaborative entrepreneurial spirit and passion for her clients will lead to a successful business in the region,” said Laurie Kerkering, president of the Exton Region Chamber of Commerce. “We were honored to be part of such a special celebration.”
Reiki is administered through the hands of a Reiki practitioner with the client lying fully clothed on a massage table. A session usually lasts between 45 minutes to an hour and a half and shorter sessions are also possible.
The Reiki practitioner places their hands at locations around the head and shoulders, the abdomen and on the legs and feet. Tissue is not manipulated. The practitioner’s hands are simply held at each location, lightly touching or slightly away from the body. Reiki energy flows from the practitioner’s hands and into the client’s body and energy field. A Reiki session feels relaxing, and promotes peace, wellbeing and healing, Ullman said.
“I like to describe it this way: If I can relieve you of stress and anxiety while promoting healing, would you like some,” Ullman said in describing the practice that started in Japan.
Ullman began practicing Reiki in the area in 2010 at the Lionville Holistic Center. She had been working out of the Spirit of Yoga location on Lancaster Avenue in Downingtown for the last four years until her business had grown enough to warrant its own location.
Pushing that growth, Ullman said, was the addition of the laser skin center. There, a laser is used to remove visible fine lines, blood vessels, age spots, acne, hair and rosacea without damaging surrounding tissues. Clients also can get Botox injections from a doctor at the center.
The cosmetologist said she works with cancer patients who are dealing with loss of hair and other side effects from treatment.
“It’s a 12-step ‘Look Good Feel Better’ program where we deal with everything from eyebrows and wigs to the rest of it,” Ullman said, adding that she’s been to area hospitals to help patients there. “It makes them feel better while they’re in treatment.”
Ullman, a mother of two who is not related to the actress of the same name, said the holistic living lifestyle was ingrained in her after a near death experience in 2009 when she was overcome in a sweat lodge and nearly died. She went into a coma for four hours.
From that, she said, she learned the importance of trusting her instincts. She teaches personal enrichment classes through Chester County Night School on topics of Soul Beauty, Angels, Intuition Development, and Personal Empowerment.
Ullman, who has hosted a radio show on WCHE that explores trends in the holistic treatment field, said she sees 20 to 40 clients a week and has a client base of about 300 people.
