petitors have expanded into other counties.
According to its history, Benchmark FCU began by serving employees of John Wyeth & Brothers Inc. in Philadelphia in 1940, which later became Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, then Pfizer in 2009. Benchmark settled in Chester County to serve its membership, which now tops 12,500.
In 2015, Benchmark announced a new community charter that expanded its footprint beyond Wyeth employees and enabled it to exclusively serve Chester County. It is owned by its members and received approval to expand on April 10, 2015, just in time for its 75th anniversary.
Benchmark provides its members with the same or more financial services as larger competitors, including free checking accounts, vacation and holiday club accounts, loans, certificates, money market accounts and individual retirement accounts. Benchmark also has home banking, online bill payer, account-to-account transfers, remote deposit anywhere, mobile banking, direct deposit, and instant issue debit/ATM cards.
Mark Yoder, president of the Greater West Chester Chamber of Commerce, said Benchmark has been a solid corporate citizen and has been a sponsor of the annual Criterium bike race that draws thousands to the borough.
“It’s great for the chamber to see their growth,” Yoder said at Tuesday’s ribbon cutting of the West Chester branch. “Benchmark has been so supportive of our mission and very active in the community.”
With the openings of the new branches the credit union employs 38 people.
