‘Get Moving Day’
Hundreds of West Chester Area School District staff and family members participated in the West Chester Area School District’s first-ever “Get Moving Day” on Oct. 23.
The district’s Healthy Living Committee, which is composed of teachers from all 16 schools as well as administrators, coordinated the free event. “We decided to coordinate Get Moving Day to help raise awareness that getting healthy is a positive thing for a million different reasons, including the fun it creates when people get healthy together,” said Jeff Ulmer, the director of human resources who helped coordinate the event. “Plus, this event also functioned as a great way for our committee to help create awareness of the district’s commitment to fitness and wellness.”
Get Moving Day was held inside East High School’s stadium and featured a variety of activities for the whole family, including yoga, dancing, and a Kids Zone that featured hula hoops, a
parachute and other games.
Attendees had the opportunity to participate in a run and walk, enter to win a variety of raffle prizes, enjoy healthy snacks, and meet representatives from local community organizations.
The weather was perfect, too, making being outdoors
on a sunny, fall afternoon even more enjoyable.
The event concluded with a popular school mascot race: a 50-yard dash from the middle of the stadium’s football field to the end zone. Mascots from nine schools participated in the race, and at first it looked like it would come down to a photo finish; however, Fern Hill Elementary School’s bobcat prevailed andwon by more than a tail length.
“We hope participants were inspired to get moving by attending Get Moving Day,” said Nancy O’Banion,a teacher at Mary C. Howse Elementary School who helped coordinate the event. “We also hope attendees had fun while enjoying the company of their fellow employees outside of our busy work place.”
The Healthy Living Committee plans to make Get Moving Day an annual event, continuing to grow
it each year.
