Robert Belfanti Jr., who spent 30 years in state House, dies

MOUNT CARMEL, PA. >> A for­mer state law­maker who spent three decades in the state House rep­re­sent­ing cen­tral Penn­syl­va­nia has died. Robert Belfanti Jr. was 68.

The (Sun­bury) Daily Item re­ports that an obit­u­ary pro­vided by the Joseph Stutz, Inc. Fu­neral Home said Belfanti died Satur­day at home sur­rounded by fam­ily mem­bers af­ter a long bat­tle with se­ri­ous med­i­cal prob­lems.

First elected in 1980 in 107th District, Belfanti bucked Demo­cratic lead­ers in a suc­cess­ful ef­fort to save what was then Shamokin State Gen­eral Hos­pi­tal from di­vesti­ture and also helped se­cure fund­ing for lo­cal high­way projects such as the widen­ing of Route 901 from Lo­cust Sum­mit to In­ter­state 81.
