Kathryn L. ‘Kathy’ Scherbner of Downingtown
Kathryn L. “Kathy” Scherbner, 64, formerly of Lafayette Hill, passed away Wednesday, November 2, 2016, at The Belvedere Center in Chester. Born in Philadelphia, she was the daughter of the late Paul G., Sr. and Clara B. (nee Ulshafer) Haines.
Kathy was a 1970 graduate of Plymouth-Whitemarsh High School. After high school she attended Lynchburg College, earning a bachelor’s degree in music education, and Temple University, earning a master’s degree in music education. She went on to have a career in education as a music teacher in the Philadelphia School District, retiring in 2011 with 36 years’ service.
Lutheran in faith, Kathy was a member of St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Chester Springs for over 35 years. She was active in the senior group and sang in the church choir for many years. A musician, Kathy was a vocalist and could play violin, piano, and guitar. She also taught private piano lessons in her home. In her spare time she enjoyed swimming at the West Chester YMCA.
She is survived by a son, P. Douglas Scherbner, of Downingtown. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brothers, Paul Gordon Haines, Jr., and Richard Alan Haines.
A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, November 8, at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, 2440 Conestoga Road, Chester Springs, PA 19425. There will not be a visitation prior to the service. Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Tanzania Orphanage, care of St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, at the above address.
