Kathryn L. ‘Kathy’ Scherb­ner of Down­ing­town

Kathryn L. “Kathy” Scherb­ner, 64, for­merly of Lafayette Hill, passed away Wed­nes­day, November 2, 2016, at The Belvedere Cen­ter in Chester. Born in Philadel­phia, she was the daugh­ter of the late Paul G., Sr. and Clara B. (nee Ul­shafer) Haines.

Kathy was a 1970 grad­u­ate of Ply­mouth-Whitemarsh High School. Af­ter high school she at­tended Lynch­burg Col­lege, earn­ing a bach­e­lor’s de­gree in mu­sic ed­u­ca­tion, and Tem­ple Univer­sity, earn­ing a mas­ter’s de­gree in mu­sic ed­u­ca­tion. She went on to have a ca­reer in ed­u­ca­tion as a mu­sic teacher in the Philadel­phia School District, re­tir­ing in 2011 with 36 years’ ser­vice.

Lutheran in faith, Kathy was a mem­ber of St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Chester Springs for over 35 years. She was ac­tive in the se­nior group and sang in the church choir for many years. A mu­si­cian, Kathy was a vo­cal­ist and could play vi­o­lin, pi­ano, and gui­tar. She also taught pri­vate pi­ano lessons in her home. In her spare time she en­joyed swim­ming at the West Chester YMCA.

She is sur­vived by a son, P. Dou­glas Scherb­ner, of Down­ing­town. In ad­di­tion to her par­ents, she was pre­de­ceased by her broth­ers, Paul Gor­don Haines, Jr., and Richard Alan Haines.

A memo­rial ser­vice will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Tues­day, November 8, at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, 2440 Con­estoga Road, Chester Springs, PA 19425. There will not be a vis­i­ta­tion prior to the ser­vice. In­ter­ment will be pri­vate.
