Car­men Evans Culp of Malvern

Car­men Evans Culp, 87, passed away peace­fully on Novem­ber 6, 2016 at the Paoli Hos­pi­tal fol­low­ing a lengthy ill­ness. She was born in Wilkes-Barre PA and grad­u­ate of Hanover Area High School class of 1946.

Car­men’s dis­tin­guished ca­reer as an ed­u­ca­tor is hall­marked by ex­cel­lence in teach­ing, prolific au­thor­ship, and un­wa­ver­ing ser­vice. A grad­u­ate of West Ch­ester State Teach­ers Col­lege with a Bach­e­lor of Science in mu­sic ed­u­ca­tion and a Mas­ter’s of Ed­u­ca­tion in mu­sic, she earned nu­mer­ous lo­cal, state, and na­tional awards. The Penn­syl­va­nia Mu­sic Ed­u­ca­tors As­so­ci­a­tion’s rec­og­nized her ca­reer by award­ing her a place in the or­ga­ni­za­tion’s Hall of Fame.

As the first class­room mu­sic ed­u­ca­tor and first woman pres­i­dent of the Penn­syl­va­nia Mu­sic Ed­u­ca­tors As­so­ci­a­tion, Car­men changed the fo­cus from con­cept per­for­mance to equal in­clu­sion of class­room mu­sic teach­ing. She was pres­i­dent of the Tredyf­frin-East­town Ed­u­ca­tion As­so­ci­a­tion. Car­men was a se­nior au­thor of both The Mu­sic Con­nec­tion books and The World of Mu­sic books, co-au­thor of two ad­di­tional ti­tles, and served as project ad­vi­sor for the film Why is Mu­sic Mu­sic?

Fol­low­ing re­tire­ment af­ter 42 years as a mu­sic ed­u­ca­tor and cho­ral di­rec­tor, Car­men served as a part-time in­struc­tor at Im­mac­u­lata and Rose­mont col­leges, as an in­struc­tor for mu­sic ed­u­ca­tor work­shops through­out the coun­try, and as a cur­ricu­lum con­sul­tant to school districts.

Car­men was a tire­less con­trib­u­tor to the West Ch­ester Uni­ver­sity Alumni As­so­ci­a­tion. She served as pres­i­dent of the As­so­ci­a­tion’s board of di­rec­tors and was named board pres­i­dent emerita. In recog­ni­tion of her lead­er­ship and com­mit­ment to the uni­ver­sity she re­ceived both the Dis­tin­guished Alumni award and Pres­i­dents award. In 2014, she re­ceived the Pres­i­den­tial Medal­lion for Ser­vice.

Car­men was pre­ceded in death by her par­ents, Richard H. and Ma­bel C. Evans. She was the wife of the late Lewis W. Culp Jr., with whom she shared 59 years of a de­voted and lov­ing mar­riage and friend­ship.

Rel­a­tives and friends are in­vited to at­tend Car­men’s fu­neral ser­vice on Satur­day, Novem­ber 12, 2016 at the Mauger-Givnish Fu­neral Home 24 Mon­u­ment Ave, Malvern, PA. Visi­ta­tion will be­gin at 10:00 am with ser­vices at 11:00 am. In­ter­ment will be on Mon­day, Novem­ber 14, 2016 at 11:00am in Maple Hill Ceme­tery, Saint Mary’s Road, Hanover Town­ship.
