Carmen Evans Culp of Malvern
Carmen Evans Culp, 87, passed away peacefully on November 6, 2016 at the Paoli Hospital following a lengthy illness. She was born in Wilkes-Barre PA and graduate of Hanover Area High School class of 1946.
Carmen’s distinguished career as an educator is hallmarked by excellence in teaching, prolific authorship, and unwavering service. A graduate of West Chester State Teachers College with a Bachelor of Science in music education and a Master’s of Education in music, she earned numerous local, state, and national awards. The Pennsylvania Music Educators Association’s recognized her career by awarding her a place in the organization’s Hall of Fame.
As the first classroom music educator and first woman president of the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association, Carmen changed the focus from concept performance to equal inclusion of classroom music teaching. She was president of the Tredyffrin-Easttown Education Association. Carmen was a senior author of both The Music Connection books and The World of Music books, co-author of two additional titles, and served as project advisor for the film Why is Music Music?
Following retirement after 42 years as a music educator and choral director, Carmen served as a part-time instructor at Immaculata and Rosemont colleges, as an instructor for music educator workshops throughout the country, and as a curriculum consultant to school districts.
Carmen was a tireless contributor to the West Chester University Alumni Association. She served as president of the Association’s board of directors and was named board president emerita. In recognition of her leadership and commitment to the university she received both the Distinguished Alumni award and Presidents award. In 2014, she received the Presidential Medallion for Service.
Carmen was preceded in death by her parents, Richard H. and Mabel C. Evans. She was the wife of the late Lewis W. Culp Jr., with whom she shared 59 years of a devoted and loving marriage and friendship.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend Carmen’s funeral service on Saturday, November 12, 2016 at the Mauger-Givnish Funeral Home 24 Monument Ave, Malvern, PA. Visitation will begin at 10:00 am with services at 11:00 am. Interment will be on Monday, November 14, 2016 at 11:00am in Maple Hill Cemetery, Saint Mary’s Road, Hanover Township.
