Keep praying for what you want
DEAR CHAPLAIN>> I’m praying to get a specific job, that’s located close enough that I can reasonably drive to it, and that falls within the salary range I want. I am getting job offers that meet some of the things I’m praying for but not all of them. Do I wait on the one that meets all of my needs or do I take one of the jobs I was offered? I just want to make sure I’m making the right decision. I’m currently working so I’m not in a desperate situation. Just praying for the ideal job to meet my long term goals. Signed, Praying for Selection
DEAR PRAYING FOR SELECTION>> Thank you for your question. First let me say it’s a good thing to pray and ask God to help us with direction and selection. So many people don’t pray for themselves because they think it’s selfish or they don’t want to bother God. This couldn’t be further from the truth. God wants us to depend on him like we’re little children (Matt 18:3). He wants us to come to him with our every need and desire. In fact, the more we come to him, the more we depend on him, the deeper our relationship grows with him. God wants us to talk with him like a friend, being as specific as possible because he wants to give us the desires of our hearts (Ps 37:4; Ps 20:4). He wants to answer our prayers in detail because that’s one of the ways he reveals himself to us. God doesn’t give us part of a blessing. He doesn’t give us half of a car, the top of a house, or a portion of a spouse. When God blesses us with a gift, he gives us the whole enchilada...and then some. Proverbs 10:22 says, “The blessing of the Lord, it maketh rich, and he addeth no sorrow with it.” Hannah in the Bible couldn’t have children for years. She prayed her heart out in the temple. She prayed she and her husband would have a child, born of her womb, and that her child would be male. Not only did God answer exactly what she wanted, but her son became the well known prophet Samuel, and the Lord blessed her with other children as well. In Egypt, the children of Israel prayed for deliverance. Years later, not only did God make a path for them straight through the Red Sea, but their oppressors gave them gold and riches when they set them free. When God blesses, he blesses us completely, nothing missing nothing broken. I encourage you to keep praying for what you want, and wait on the Lord, he wants to give you all of the desires of your heart. And know that every quick decision may not be the best decision, and every good selection may not be a Godly selection. A Godly selection will not only meet your expectations, needs and desires, but it will also exceed them. Wait on the Lord. Be anxious for nothing. Pray for everything with thanksgiving and keep the faith, because as I tell my children’s Bible study students, he’s working it all out behind the scenes.
