Over 400 celebrate annual ESL Family Night
Upper Merion Area Middle School’s cafeteria was the setting for the district’s ESL Family Night on Oct. 20, initiated 16 years ago to welcome new international families into the district. School district families report more than 75 different home languages spoken. Students, family members, school district staff and community members jammed the cafeteria, enjoying a feast of foods from 45 countries prepared by the families. Guests were treated to a cultural presentation of the arts, with four performances that took the audience on a virtual trip around the world including The Coyle School of Irish Dance, the PanAsian Dance Troupe from the University of Pennsylvania, Nuevo Mexico Dance Company, and a local folk band comprised of all Upper Merion area teachers known as “The Early Dismissals.”
In addition, as part of a community service project, the middle school art students sold their culturally influenced artisanal projects. All proceeds of the sale will go to support the middle school’s Viking Relief Day, an annual fundraiser.
