Jack­son leads WCU past Gan­non

Ma­lik Jack­son scored 24 points as host West Ch­ester de­feated vis­it­ing Gan­non, 7363, in a PSAC men’s bas­ket­ball con­test in­side Hollinger Field House on Satur­day.

Ma­lik Jack­son scored 24 points as host West Ch­ester de­feated vis­it­ing Gan­non, 73-63, in a PSAC men’s bas­ket­ball con­test in­side Hollinger Field House on Satur­day.

West Ch­ester (1-2, 1-0 PSAC) earned the win in its home opener as well as its con­fer­ence opener while Gan­non (0-1, 0-1) was play­ing its first game of the 2016-17 sea­son.

Jack­son scored nine of his 24 points in the first nine min­utes of the sec­ond half as the Golden Rams opened up their largest lead of the game at 13 (5340). That spurt came dur­ing a 17-6 run that pushed a two-point ad­van­tage at the break to an in­sur­mount­able 13. Thomas White (Ch­ester, Pa./Penn Wood) added six points and a blocked shot dur­ing the de­ci­sive run as well.

Gan­non never got any closer than seven points the rest of the way. Mike Jo­laoso (Philadel­phia, Pa./ Epis­co­pal Academy) hit all six of his foul shots down the stretch to keep the Golden Knights at bay.

Jack­son’s 24 was a sea­son high – one more than he had against No. 1 West Lib­erty – while both White and Jo­laoso each added 11 points. White grabbed

six re­bounds, and Jo­laoso dished out four as­sists.

Tour­na­ment hosted by Mes­siah Col­lege. Wil­lis came up huge for the Macs as he went 10-for-13 from the field, 2-for-4 from three point range to score a ca­reer-high 22. Si­mon nearly had the first triple-dou­ble in IU his­tory as he knocked down four three-point­ers en route to 14 points to go along with the pro­gram record nine as­sists, while chip­ping in with a team-high eight re­bounds. Se­nior Roy Fer­rell Jr. (5 as­sists) and sopho­more Mike Piekarski each had 11 points.

Women’s Bas­ket­ball


59 >> West Ch­ester’s Madi­son Tor­resin reg­is­tered the go-ahead bucket in the fi­nal 34 sec­onds to help the Golden Rams se­cure a 6559 vic­tory over Gan­non Univer­sity in­side Hollinger Field House Satur­day af­ter­noon. The win marks West Ch­ester’s (1-2, 1-0 PSAC) first over­all and Penn­syl­va­nia State Ath­letic Con­fer­ence vic­tory of the sea­son. How­ever, the Golden Rams were trail­ing by four points at the half as Gan­non (04,

0-1 PSAC) knocked down 50 per­cent of its shots from be­hind the arc. Gan­non’s Mag­gie Mitchell lead ei­ther team in scor­ing, pro­duc­ing 23 points and four as­sists. Porscha Speller and Tor­resin took ad­van­tage in the third quar­ter, go­ing on a 7-0 run to ex­tend the Golden Rams’ lead. The Golden Knights an­swered in the fourth as the backand-forth af­fair would go down to the wire with Speller find­ing an open Tor­resin for the layup to seal the win. Tor­resin did lead the squad in scor­ing,

pro­vid­ing 16 points, six re­bounds, and four steals. Speller ac­cu­mu­lated 14 points, seven re­bounds, six as­sist, and three steals.

High School Boys Bas­ket­ball


PHELPS 56 >> 0-2 Tim Perry had 15 points, eight re­bounds and two blocks as the Lions (0-2) fell in the con­so­la­tion of the West­town Tour­na­ment.
