Hanover Square bridge closed

The Hanover Square Road Bridge on New Hanover Square Road in New Hanover Town­ship was closed this af­ter­noon fol­low­ing a bridge in­spec­tion that found se­vere de­te­ri­o­ra­tion of the su­per­struc­ture and bridge deck, Pen­nDOT said.

The bridge, which crosses over a branch of Swamp Creek, will re­main closed in­def­i­nitely un­til Pen­nDOT engi­neers eval­u­ate the con­di­tion of the bridge and com­plete a re­ha­bil­i­ta­tion or re­place­ment.

Dur­ing the clo­sure, mo­torists will be de­toured over Route 73 (Big Road), Route 663 (Char­lotte Street) and Swamp Pike. Lo­cal ac­cess will be main­tained up to the clo­sure.

Built in 1934, the three-span, steel-I beam, bi­tu­mi­nous bridge is 117 feet long, 29 feet wide and car­ries an av­er­age of 2,186 ve­hi­cles a day. The struc­ture had a posted weight limit of 3 tons be­fore it closed.
