Pol­lu­tion cri­sis in In­dia’s cap­i­tal

The gov­ern­ment in In­dia’s cap­i­tal of New Delhi this week in­tro­duced a se­ries of city­wide emer­gency mea­sures to deal with heavy air pol­lu­tion. The city banned trucks from en­ter­ing the cap­i­tal, tem­po­rar­ily sus­pended all civil con­struc­tion projects, and on Wed­nes­day closed all schools. Airqual­ity read­ings in In­dia’s cap­i­tal have soared since Tues­day, with one mon­i­tor show­ing lev­els of par­tic­u­late mat­ter in the city at 969. The World Health Or­ga­ni­za­tion con­sid­ers any­thing above 25 to be un­safe.
