100 Years Ago – 1917:

Wear a daisy for this is “Daisy Day.” Contribute your “bit” toward the success for the nine play centres in Chester during the summer months under the direction of the Chester Playground­s’ Associatio­n by purchasing one of more of the imitation flowers. Hundreds of school girls lined the streets in the business section this morning and it was impossible for anyone to escape without being daised.

75 Years Ago – 1942:

The Chester School Board has granted a flat pay increase to every school teacher in the city. Announceme­nt of the pay boost was made by George Carney, president of the board, at a meeting of the Chester Teachers Associatio­n. The teachers had sought a salary increase last December to help alleviate pressure of rising living costs by waited for seven month before the board took action. Approximat­ely 340 instructio­ns will benefit.

50 Years Ago – 1967:

Philadelph­ia Suburban Transporta­tion Co. (Red Arrow Lines) asked the state for a $1.5-million subsidy to improve bus service hold fares and maintain existing schedules over the next year. Red Arrow President Merritt H. Taylor Jr. coupled his request with an attack on programs proposed by the Southeaste­rn Pennsylvan­ia Transporta­tion Authority (SEPTA). Taylor told a legislativ­e hearing that if SEPTA’s proposed program for next year goes through, it will jeopardize his firm.

25 Years Ago – 1992:

Lynch-Brush Post 1521, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Morton Avenue and Hyatt Street, Chester, will install post and auxiliary officer for 1992-93 next week. Post officers to be installed include Tom Jones, commander; Joe Ruzowicj, senior vice commander; Whitey Major, junior vice commander; Frank McClenahan, quartermas­ter; Frank Bowers, chaplain, John Simmons, surgeon; Tom Bateman, adjutant general; Walter DuWegiou and Ron Diehl, trustees.

10 Years Ago – 2007:

A jury rejected the defense’s claim a defendant, who was 16 at the time, shot a man seven times in selfdefens­e in a 2005 Chester killing that was triggered by a lover’s triangle. The defendant, now 18, of the 2100 block of Madison St., Chester, was found guilty of first-degree murder in the shooting death of a 27-year-old. Both were involved with the same woman at the time. The defendant pumped his fist in the air at the verdict. His smug attitude differed from his statement to police shortly after the killing.
