DCIU announces Veteran’s Day essay winners

Daily Times (Primos, PA) - - NEWS -

The Delaware County Intermediate Unit (DCIU) is proud to announce the 2017 Delaware County Veteran’s Day Essay Contest winners. They are:

1st Place: Hope Polhill, 8th grade, Beverly Hills Middle School

2nd Place: Caroline Constable, 8th grade, Radnor Middle School

3rd Place: Riley O’Connell, 6th grade, E.T. Richardson Middle School

The focus of the Veterans Day Parade and essay contest this year is “honoring all veterans.” Students had to answer the following in 300 words or less: “Thank you for your service.”

This is a common expression of gratitude that our country offers veterans. But is a quick “thank you” all we owe returning soldiers? What do we owe our veterans — including those who have served, those who have been injured or disabled and the families that have lost someone?

Open to all Delaware County students in grades 6-8, the purpose of the contest was to challenge students to think about war and freedom in ways they never have before, to gain a sense of pride in our country and to honor and respect those brave individuals who have risked their lives for our freedom. The winners received cash prizes ($200, $150 and $100) and a certificate and were invited to read their essays at the Veteran’s Day Parade in Media Nov. 10.

Winners of the DCIU Veteran’s Day essay contest are: Riley O’Connell, 6th grade, E.T. Richardson Middle School-3rd Place Winner; Caroline Constable, 8th grade, Radnor Middle School-2nd Place Winner; Hope Polhill, 8th grade, Beverly Hills Middle School- 1st Place Winner
