Michael James St. Leger

Michael James St. Leger, age 92, of Haver­town, PA and Sara­sota, FL, passed away peace­fully on All Souls Day, Novem­ber 2, 2017.

Mike was the beloved hus­band for 53 years of the late Geral­dine (Geri) St. Leger (nee Tay­lor), lov­ing fa­ther of An­nette St. Leger Pauswin­ski (Joe) and the late Michele St. Leger Buchan. Mike is sur­vived by his brother, Jack St. Leger (Joan) and his sis­ter, Kath­leen St. Leger Mullin (the late Bud). He is also sur­vived by his grand­chil­dren Michael Boyer, Wil­liam (Pat) Boyer, and He­lene St. Leger Trues­dale (Ben), six great-grand­chil­dren, two great-great grand­daugh­ters, and over twenty nieces and neph­ews.

Mike was pre­de­ceased by his par­ents, Michael and Catharine St. Leger (nee Ma­honey), and his sib­lings Mary St. Leger Mal­loy (Gerry), Theresa St. Leger, and Joseph St. Leger (Elenor). Join­ing the Navy at age 17, Mike fol­lowed World War II across the Pa­cific. He ser­viced fighter air­craft on many for­ward air­fields, in­clud­ing New Cale­do­nia. He even­tu­ally opened the Loop Tav­ern in South­west Philadel­phia. While run­ning The Loop, Mike spent the day­time of­ten watch­ing cook­ing shows on early tele­vi­sion, which led to his life­long in­ter­est in cook­ing. Af­ter the bar closed, he was a route sales­man for Wise Potato Chips, and even­tu­ally an agent for All­state In­sur­ance. Mike re­tired from All­state in 1995 and be­gan liv­ing in Florida to pur­sue his other life-long in­ter­est: golf. Over the past year, fail­ing health led him back to Penn­syl­va­nia.

Mike was a de­vout Catholic, and felt that his life had been blessed many times by the peo­ple who took an in­ter­est in see­ing that he re­ceived good di­rec­tion in his life. He felt es­pe­cially blessed by his many friends. “I’m one re­ally lucky son of a gun” was a fre­quent com­ment.

Mike’s Penn­syl­va­nia fam­ily and friends are in­vited to his view­ing Satur­day, Novem­ber 18, 2017, 9:00 to 10:00 AM at St. Ber­nadette of Lour­des Church, 1035 Turner Av­enue, Drexel Hill, PA fol­lowed by his Fu­neral Mass at 10:00 AM. In­ter­ment SS Peter and Paul Ceme­tery, Spring­field, PA.

Mike’s Sara­sota’ friends will be in­vited to a re­mem­brance cel­e­bra­tion at a time and place to be an­nounced later.

In lieu of flow­ers, a do­na­tion to your fa­vorite char­ity is re­quested. Or, as Mike of­ten said was a bless­ing to him, you could see a poor kid and help him on his way.
