De­mery, Newkirk pro­pel St. Joe’s over Ford­ham

NEW YORK » James De­mery and Shavar Newkirk com­bined to score 39 points to help power Saint Joseph’s to a sec­ond straight win, 71-55 over Ford­ham in an At­lantic 10 con­test Wed­nes­day.

The Hawks ended their five-game los­ing streak Satur­day and com­pleted a sea­son-sweep of Ford­ham.

Saint Joe’s lim­ited the Rams to just 19 points in the first half and took an 18-point ad­van­tage into in­ter­mis­sion.

De­mery fin­ished with 20 points and grabbed six re­bounds and Newkirk scored 19, grabbed six boards and dished seven as­sists. Pier­francesco Oliva and Chris Clover each added 10 points. The Hawks (11-14, 6-7) shot 48.2 per­cent from the field and col­lected 18 as­sists on 27 made bas­kets.

Ford­ham (9-16, 4-9) fin­ished shoot­ing 43.1 per­cent from the field (22 of 51). Cavit Havsa fin­ished with 12 points and dished eight as­sists for the Rams. David Pekarek and Ivan Raut added 11 and 10 points, re­spec­tively.
