J.D. POWER’S 2018 U.S. Initial Quality Study reveals that new vehicle quality remains on the rise. “The number of problems experienced per 100 vehicles during the first 90 days of ownership, with a lower score reflecting higher quality” is how J.D. Power compiles its rankings. Results in the 2018 study find that overall vehicle exteriors are improved (for example, less wind noise), and that Ford, GM, and Fiat Chrysler lead the industry in terms of improvement. Ford, GM, and Nissan are among the companies with the most model-level accolades, and the Ford F-Series Super Duty and Chevrolet Silverado tie for top quality in the large heavy-duty pickup segment. There’s less good news about driver-assistance safety systems. J.D. Power says owner-reported problems increased by approximately 20 percent each year for three years running.
