Many in­sur­ers are cu­ri­ous about ar­ti­fi­cial in­tel­li­gence, but the tech­nol­ogy is still in its early it­er­a­tions. Le­feb­vre says that car­ri­ers can get started with more proven tech­nolo­gies, like ro­botic process au­to­ma­tion, to lay the ground­work for more ro­bust AI so­lu­tions down the road.

“You can look at ma­chine learn­ing as a con­tin­uum, with ro­botic process au­to­ma­tion the most ba­sic kind,” she says. “As you start to go up­ward in terms of so­phis­ti­ca­tion, that’s more what we can con­sider AI; a ma­chine that can an­a­lyze and learn like a hu­man.”
