Step back in time with a visit to historic Coulterville and the Northern Mariposa
County History Center. Located at the intersection
of Highways 49 & 132, at the base of the John Muir Scenic Route into Yosemite, the museum provides a glimpse of life back in the
gold rush era. Open Thursday - Sunday from 10 to 4, with free admission. The museum’s displays include relics from the gold rush
era including the 8-ton locomotive that stands out front, Whistling Billy, and
many smaller artifacts inside. Featured this year
is a Highway 49 display celebrating the 100th anniversary of the efforts to create a highway connecting the mining towns with one another. Couple your visit with a walking tour of the
town “too tough to die.”
