Quota prepares for annual Derby Day event
CAMBRIDGE — Quota International of Cambridge will host its Derby Day Dinner Gala on May 7, at the Dorchester Center for the Arts, beginning at 5:30 p.m. with a cash bar. At 6:30 p.m., there will be a televised “Run for the Roses” to cheer on a favorite horse.
Women are encouraged to wear their hats and men to show their best race tie for traditional derby attire. A hat and gentlemen’s tie contest will precede a Derby Day buffet catered by Old Salty’s Restaurant. Mike Elzey will be performing live music.
During the evening, there will be silent and live auctions. Live auctime items include a weeklong vacation at the Historic Powhatan Resort in Williamsburg, Va.; dinner for eight people at Old Salty’s; shooting lessons from Delmarva Sporting Clays; a Quota Club Cocktail Party for 20 friends at your home led by Quota members; and two original paintings, one by Colleen Curran-Bromwell and one by Bebe Winterbottom.
Raffle tickets for a multi-strand pearl necklace and earrings to match, hand-crafted by Dorchester County Jeweler Lynn Stavdal, will be on sale in April by all Quota members and during the event.
All profits from the auctions are used throughout the community to help the hearing impaired and to assist families in need. Over the past year, Quota has purchased more than $10,000 in hearing aids for community residents.
Quota also funded projects totaling $3,000 for the disadvantaged women and children of the community that included the Salvation Army and the Mid-Shore Council for Family Violence, partnered with Grace United Methodist Church in filling backpacks for at-risk children with food supplies for weekends, and donated school supplies to Sandy Hill and Choptank elementary schools. The club continues to focus on an after-school program at the Empowerment Center located on Pine Street, among other efforts.
Quota International of Cambridge was chartered in 1968 with a mission to help the hearing and speech impaired and disadvantaged women and children. The club will celebrate its 48th anniversary in October.
