EAST NEW MAR­KET — Fred­er­ick W. Hughes Sr., 81, of East New Mar­ket, MD, passed away on Wed­nes­day, May 11, 2016, at UMSMC at Dorch­ester. He was born on Jan. 17, 1935, in Dorch­ester County and was a son of the late Ruth Hughes Hill.

Mr. Hughes grad­u­ated from Cam­bridge High School class of 1953. He served in the Army Na­tional Guard. On Sept. 28, 1956, he mar­ried the for­mer He­len Sim­mons. He worked at the Cam­bridge Wire Cloth with 47 years of ser­vice. Mr. Hughes en­joyed play­ing mu­sic with his elec­tronic pi­ano and his ac­cor­dion. He also coached Lit­tle League, youth bowl­ing, men’s soft­ball and was on the men’s bowl­ing league.

He is sur­vived by his wife of 59 years, He­len F. Hughes of East New Mar­ket; two sons, Fred­er­ick W. Hughes Jr. of East New

Mar­ket, and David W. Hughes of East New Mar­ket; a sis­ter, Dar­lene Chap­man and hus­band John of North Carolina; and sev­eral nieces and neph­ews. Be­sides his mother, Mr. Hughes is pre­ceded in death by a sis­ter, Lur­ray Jones, and two broth­ers, Ron­ald Hughes and Don­ald Hughes.

Pall­bear­ers will be Hubert Meekins, Matthew Meekins, Wen­dell Meekins, Richard Meekins, Wen­dell Meekins Jr. and Ma­son Lit­tle.

A fu­neral ser­vice was held on Mon­day, May 16, at Thomas Fu­neral Home, P.A. in Cam­bridge, with Rev. Jack Diehl of­fi­ci­at­ing. In­ter­ment fol­lowed at Dorch­ester Memo­rial Park.
