Frederick W. Hughes Sr.
EAST NEW MARKET — Frederick W. Hughes Sr., 81, of East New Market, MD, passed away on Wednesday, May 11, 2016, at UMSMC at Dorchester. He was born on Jan. 17, 1935, in Dorchester County and was a son of the late Ruth Hughes Hill.
Mr. Hughes graduated from Cambridge High School class of 1953. He served in the Army National Guard. On Sept. 28, 1956, he married the former Helen Simmons. He worked at the Cambridge Wire Cloth with 47 years of service. Mr. Hughes enjoyed playing music with his electronic piano and his accordion. He also coached Little League, youth bowling, men’s softball and was on the men’s bowling league.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Helen F. Hughes of East New Market; two sons, Frederick W. Hughes Jr. of East New
Market, and David W. Hughes of East New Market; a sister, Darlene Chapman and husband John of North Carolina; and several nieces and nephews. Besides his mother, Mr. Hughes is preceded in death by a sister, Lurray Jones, and two brothers, Ronald Hughes and Donald Hughes.
Pallbearers will be Hubert Meekins, Matthew Meekins, Wendell Meekins, Richard Meekins, Wendell Meekins Jr. and Mason Little.
A funeral service was held on Monday, May 16, at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge, with Rev. Jack Diehl officiating. Interment followed at Dorchester Memorial Park.
