CAMBRIDGE — This Memorial Day weekend, residents and visitors of Cambridge will enjoy viewing a large display of American flags planted along the Choptank River waterfront, placed there by the Cambridge Rotary Club.

The display is part of the Flags for Heroes project and the Cambridge Rotary planted their flags in time for Memorial Day weekend and the Cambridge Power Boat Regatta.

“It shows our Rotary Club of Cambridge’s continued commitment to honor those in our community who make or have made a difference in our personal lives, our community and our country,” said Cambridge Rotary President Judy Prahl.

Many Rotary clubs in the same district– which stretches from Wilmington, Del., to Pocomoke City and westward to Kent Island–have also joined in the Flags for Heroes with their own displays.

Each flag planted is sponsored with a $50 contribution by individuals or companies.

“Net funds will be used for scholarships for returning veterans to get higher education,” Prahl said. “Each sponsor is asked to make the contribution to our Cambridge Rotary Service Foundation, which is a 501-c3, so that their contributions are tax-deductible.”

Cambridge Rotary awards college scholarships to high school seniors–a total of $17,000 to 2016 graduates–and distributes awards for special honors such as Teacher of the Year, First Class Teacher of the Year, Senior Students of the Semester, Service Above Self award winners, and middle school students who achieve academic excellence.

The Flags for Heroes has been supported by Dorchester County Tourism and the Dorchester Chamber of Commerce as well.

On May 27, the eve of the 106th Cambridge Classic Power Boat Regatta, Rockin’ the Choptank, a free concert featuring the music of Blackwater, will be held at the Dorchester County Visitor Center Amphitheater at Sailwinds Park, 2 Rose Hill Place. The concert is sponsored by Comcast Spotlight.
