CH­ESTER — Thelma Wha­ley Phillips of Ch­ester, MD, passed away on May 24, 2016 at the Heart­land House in Gra­sonville. She was 87.

Born Nov. 9, 1928, in Lau­rel, DE, she was the daugh­ter of the late Thomas Henry and El­iz­a­beth Ellen Collins Wha­ley.

She grad­u­ated with the Class of 1946 from Lau­rel High School. On Aug. 6, 1947, she mar­ried Roy Ben­jamin Phillips of Gum­boro, DE. Mrs. Phillips helped her hus­band dur­ing his ca­reer as United Methodist Min­is­ter. Their charges were on the Eastern Shore of Mary­land and Delaware.

Af­ter her chil­dren were raised, she worked in An­napo­lis at the Mary­land State Board of Fu­neral Di­rec­tors. She was a school sub­sti­tute for Queen Anne’s County School Sys­tem, and did proof­read­ing for the State of Mary­land Code Re­vi­sion De­part­ment. Mrs. Phillips was a mem­ber of the Kent Is­land United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women.

She is sur­vived by her son; Jef­frey Craig Phillips of Ch­ester, MD, four grand­chil­dren, four great­grand­chil­dren, and one great-great grand­daugh­ter.

She was pre­ceded in death by her par­ents; her hus­band Roy Ben­jamin Phillips; two sons, By­ron Keith Phillips and Rus­sell Barry Phillips; a grand­son, By­ron Keith Phillips Jr.; a sis­ter, Mar­garet Boyce, and her broth­ers: Ken­neth Collins Wha­ley, Clarence Wha­ley and Mon­roe Wha­ley.

Vis­i­ta­tion will be held on Mon­day, May 30, from 4-6 p.m. at Kent Is­land United Methodist Church and ser­vices on Tues­day, May 31, 11 a.m. at the church. Burial will be pri­vate in Stevensville Ceme­tery.
