Thelma Whaley Phillips
CHESTER — Thelma Whaley Phillips of Chester, MD, passed away on May 24, 2016 at the Heartland House in Grasonville. She was 87.
Born Nov. 9, 1928, in Laurel, DE, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Henry and Elizabeth Ellen Collins Whaley.
She graduated with the Class of 1946 from Laurel High School. On Aug. 6, 1947, she married Roy Benjamin Phillips of Gumboro, DE. Mrs. Phillips helped her husband during his career as United Methodist Minister. Their charges were on the Eastern Shore of Maryland and Delaware.
After her children were raised, she worked in Annapolis at the Maryland State Board of Funeral Directors. She was a school substitute for Queen Anne’s County School System, and did proofreading for the State of Maryland Code Revision Department. Mrs. Phillips was a member of the Kent Island United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women.
She is survived by her son; Jeffrey Craig Phillips of Chester, MD, four grandchildren, four greatgrandchildren, and one great-great granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Roy Benjamin Phillips; two sons, Byron Keith Phillips and Russell Barry Phillips; a grandson, Byron Keith Phillips Jr.; a sister, Margaret Boyce, and her brothers: Kenneth Collins Whaley, Clarence Whaley and Monroe Whaley.
Visitation will be held on Monday, May 30, from 4-6 p.m. at Kent Island United Methodist Church and services on Tuesday, May 31, 11 a.m. at the church. Burial will be private in Stevensville Cemetery.
