CAMBRIDGE — On Thursday, June 2, students at Cambridge-South Dorchester High School celebrated their efforts to improve the courtyard at their school with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

In conjunction with the Mid-Shore Riverkeepers Conser vancy and with the permission of Principal David Bromwell and Dorchester County Public Schools Superintendent Henry Wagner, students in Lauren Hurley’s science classes cleaned up the outdoor space.

The project included power-washing the concrete surfaces, sanding and

repainting the picnic tables, and removing invasive plants to replace them with native species. Students also had the idea to hang whiteboards on the wall to make the space usable as an outdoor classroom.

“They decided to remove the plants,” said MRC Education and Outreach Coordinator Elle O’Brien. “They decided what plants would be planted here. They did all the work, all the painting. I think you went above and beyond, Ms. Hurley’s classes. You did a fantastic job.”

Wagner and County Councilman Don Satterfield were in attendance and also praised the students for their hard work.
