North 8 — South 1 MARDELA SPRINGS — The North Bayside all stars played a victor y tune during Monday’s 8-1 victory over the South in the annual Bayside Conference senior softball game at Mardela High.

Colonel Richardson shortstop Jazmine Brooks earned most valuable player honors with a two-hit, three-RBI performance. Cambridge-South Dorchester ace Paige Bleyer shut down the South with seven strikeouts over four innings to pick up the victory.

“It felt amazing to come out here and get the victory with the best players in the Bayside,” Brooks said. “It is an honor to be selected to be on the team, and a great feeling they chose me as MVP today.

“I knew coming in here we would have a great team,” she added. “We’ve all known each other since we were little. It is a really good time playing with all of them. I’m proud of the way the team played together.”

Brooks was joined on the team by Colonel classmates Jayna Turner and Madison Bee.

Turner gave the North a 2-0 lead in the first inning when she belted a double to left to plate Brooks and North Caroline’s Mackenzie Short (1 for 2).

“It has been amazing playing with Jayna the past four years,” Brooks said. “She is a lot of fun to play with and always gets big hits and makes big catches in right field.

“Maddie Bee has made so many big plays for us at third base,” Brooks added. “It has been a pleasure being her teammate.”

Kent County catcher Alyssa Kendall followed Turner by ripping a single to center to plate North Dorchester’s Autumn Hassler (1 for 2) for a 3-0 lead.

Bleyer dominated the South’s hitters, but got help from her defense. In the bottom of the first, James M. Bennett’s Cheyenne Harvill belted a pitch to the left-center field gap, but Easton’s Kassidy Willis made a diving catch for the out.

With runners on first and third and two outs, Snow Hill’s Shelby Smith hit a pitch in the hole that Brooks backhanded and fired to Short at first for the third out to end the first inning.

Bleyer went on to allow five hits in four innings.

Brooks spoke highly of Bleyer, her Bayside Breeze travel ball teammate.

“Paige pitched a great game,” she said. “It was great to be on her side this time.

“I was actually playing with Paige last weekend in a tournament, and we both knew we were going to be in the Bayside game,” Brooks added. “I told Paige how neat it was to be on the same team, but this time in a high school game. This was really exciting.”

A double by Cambridge-SD’s Karli Lewis gave Brooks a chance to extend the lead in the third, and she delivered with a single to left to plate Lewis for a 4-0 lead.

Kent County’s Julia Blackburn relieved Bleyer to start the fifth and didn’t allow a hit over three innings. The South scored an unearned run in the seventh.

Singles in the sixth by Cambridge-SD’s Kaylie Seabrease (1 for 2) and Jackson (1 for 2) gave Brooks another opportunity to extend the lead. Brooks delivered again with a two-run single to left for a 6-0 lead.

The North added to its lead in the seventh when Kendall (2 for 3, three RBIs) hit a two-run single to center for an 8-0 lead.

The South got on the board in the bottom of the seventh when Mardela’s Maddy Catlin scored on an error.

The North was coached by North Bayside Coach of the Year Dave Fisher, who led St. Michaels to an undefeated regular season and the school’s first conference championship.

Other members of the North team included Kent County’s Rachel Nelson, St. Michaels’ Chase Browning and Queen Anne’s Alyssa Jackson.

The South all stars included Mardela’s Maddy Caitlin, Mackensie Disbennett, Kasey Goshorn, Baylee Littleton (South MVP), Amber Lovelace and Megan Ray; Parkside’s Cierra Hearn; Pocomoke’s McKenzie Beachump and Katelynn Tatterson; Snow Hill’s Shelby Smith; Stephen Decatur’s Madelynn King; Washington’s Laura Fisher, Laura Malendoski and MaKenzie McIntye; and Wicomico’s Jordan Teagle.

The South was coached by Mardela head coach Kory Shiles who led the Warriors to the 1A East Region crown.
