CAMBRIDGE — The third annual Cambridge-South Dorchester High Athletic Hall of Fame class has been selected; a banquet honoring the 2016 inductees takes place at 5 p.m. Sept. 3, in the high school gymnasium.

Tickets for the event are $20 per person, and it is open to the public.

“Every year, we select one team from the past, and also several individuals,” said C-SD athletic director Dan Dobronz. “We also try to get one person from each of the three former high schools [in the area], one from Mace’s Lane, one from Cambridge High, and one from South Dorchester. That’s what we call the Pioneer Award.”

Annually beginning in 2014, each crop of new inductees have been honored before a C-SD home football game, with the celebratory banquet held the next evening at the high school. The last two years, the banquet has been held at the Dorchester Career and Technology Center, or DCTC, but this year, the inductees need a bit more room.

This year’s public ceremony takes place just before the Vikings’ season opener, at home Sept. 2 against Wicomico High.

“The 1996 C-SD football team was inducted this year,” Dobronz said, “and you can imagine how much space that would take up if all 50 players came, and all of them brought their wives — that’s 100 people right there.

“So we’re going to have it in the gym,” Dobronz said. “That will hold a lot more people.”

In addition to the 1996 Viking state champ football team, the individual inductees include: • Abby Messick, a twotime state tennis champion; • Antwan Lake, a state champ in football and basketball and former NFL defensive lineman; • Ryan Fleetwood, a twosport star and starting quarterback on the 1995 state championship football team; • Tyrone Travis, a dominant C-SD basketball center who won a state title in 1989, and went on to play in college, and as a pro overseas; • Dickie Moore, catcher for the 1977 state champ baseball team, the school’s first team to take a state title; • Dave Woolfolk, a multisport star who played football on the 1979 football champ team and West Point player when the team won its first-ever bowl game.

The Pioneer Award recipients for this year are: • Bobby Elliott, a hardwood star and 1968 graduate of Mace’s Lane High, who averaged 24 points and 17 rebounds a game his senior year, and who also starred on multiple state-champ track teams; • Steve Davis, a multiskilled athlete who graduated from Cambridge High in 1972, and played college and professional football; • Mickey Hubbard, who coached 2015 C-SD Hall of Fame inductee John Murphy at South Dorchester High, when he won multiple state cross-country titles; Hubbard later coached at Cambridge High as well. Almost every individual inductee, as well as a number of players and coaches from the 1996 C-SD football team, will be in attendance for the banquet. Tickets will be on sale up until it starts.

Contact C-SD at 410-2289224 to purchase tickets or for more information.
