CAM­BRIDGE — Charles W. Kelly, 99, of Cam­bridge, MD, passed away on Fri­day, July 22, 2016, at UMSMC at Dorch­ester. He was born on Hol­land Is­land, Feb. 15, 1917, and was the son of the late Charles P. and Rosa Wal­ters Kelly. A few months af­ter he was born, his fam­ily moved to Cam­bridge.

Mr. Kelly grad­u­ated from Cam­bridge High School in the Class of 1934. It was then that he started work­ing at Craig’s Drug Store mak­ing de­liv­er­ies on his bi­cy­cle. He was drafted in the U.S. Army to serve his coun­try dur­ing WW II and was hon­or­ably dis­charged on May 23, 1945. When he re­turned from the ser­vice, Mr. Kelly at­tended Univer­sity of Mary­land, School of Phar­macy and grad­u­ated in 1949. He re­turned to Craig’s as a phar­ma­cist and re­mained there as part owner with Mr. Earl Web­ster and friend Claren­don Gould. He con­tin­ued to work at Craig’s help­ing his son Chuck, with the daily sales and de­posits un­til he was 95 years old.

On May 26, 1945, he mar­ried the for­mer Dorothy Wee­don, who passed away on Sept. 11, 1960. On Oct. 14, 1961, he mar­ried the for­mer Janet Phillips, who passed away on Dec. 26, 1998.

Mr. Kelly served on the Dorch­ester County Board of Ed­u­ca­tion from 1966 to 1977, and on the board of di­rec­tors for F&M Bank and later, the Ad­vi­sory Board of the 1st Na­tional Bank of Mary­land. He was a life mem­ber of Chop­tank Memo­rial Post 7460, Dis­abled Veter­ans and Alumni of Univer­sity of Mary­land Phar­macy School. Mr. Kelly was also a mem­ber of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, Cam­bridge Yacht Club, Amer­i­can Le­gion Post 91, Cam­bridge Lodge #66 A.F. & A.M., Cam­bridge Elks Lodge, Cam­bridge Skeet and Gun Club and an hon­orary mem­ber of Cam­bridge Res­cue Fire Com­pany.

He is sur­vived by two sons, Charles “Chuck” W. Kelly and wife Karen, of Cam­bridge, and Richard L. Kelly and wife Kathy, of Cam­bridge, a daugh­ter Jen­nifer K. Grier and husband Lee, of Cam­bridge, eight grand­chil­dren: Charles “Chuckie” W. Kelly Jr., Stephen Kelly, Jacquelyn Kelly, Su­san Collins, Shawna Kelly, Collin Grier, Kevin Grier and Sean Grier, nine great grand­chil­dren, sev­eral nieces and neph­ews, and many spe­cial friends, in­clud­ing Vi­vian Owens. Be­sides his par­ents and wives, Mr. Kelly is pre­ceded in death by a sis­ter, Mazie K. Wroten.

Pall­bear­ers will be Chuckie Kelly, Stephen Kelly, Collin Grier, Kevin Grier, Sean Grier and Aaron Collins. Hon­orary pall­bear­ers will be Den­nis Hur­ley and Lee Grier.

A fu­neral ser­vice will be held on Fri­day, July 29, 1 p.m. at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, with Rev. Bon­nie Shively of­fi­ci­at­ing. In­ter­ment will fol­low at Dorch­ester Memo­rial Park. Fam­ily will re­ceive friends from 11 to 1 at the church.
