CAM­BRIDGE — W. Har­ri­son Sped­den, 96, of Cam­bridge passed away on Thurs­day, July 28, 2016, at Mal­lard Bay Care Cen­ter. He was born in Cam­bridge on Dec. 17, 1919, and was a son of the late Wil­liam and Rosa Har­ri­son Sped­den.

In 1938, Mr. Sped­den achieved 100 yard run record in high school and grad­u­ated from Cam­bridge High School, class of 1939. He served in the United States Army Air Corps from 1941 to 1945, and in 1944, Mr. Sped­den was sta­tioned in North Africa. In 1946 to 1948, he taught in Dorch­ester County Pub­lic Schools. From 1949 to 1953, he served in the U. S. Air Force sta­tioned in Ger­many. Mr. Sped­den at­tended Ap­palachian STC in Boone, N.C., and in 1961, he re­ceived his de­gree in law from Univer­sity of Mary­land. In 1979, he re­tired from the East­ern Shore Hos­pi­tal Cen­ter, where he was a ther­a­pist in the re­ha­bil­i­ta­tion depart­ment. Mr. Sped­den also was on the Cam­bridge Hu­man Re­la­tions Com­mit­tee and on the Cam­bridge Po­lice Com­mis­sion. He was a mem­ber of Grace United Methodist Church, Baraca Class, a life mem­ber of the Chop­tank Me­mo­rial Post 7460 VFW, and a for­mer mem­ber of the Amer­i­can Legion Post 91 and of the Cam­bridge Elks.

He is sur­vived by his sis­ter, Shirley Sped­den of Cam­bridge; and sev­eral cousins.

A funeral ser vice was held on Wed­nes­day, Aug. 3, at Thomas Funeral Home P.A. in Cam­bridge with Rev. Christina Blake of­fi­ci­at­ing. In­ter­ment will fol­low at East New Mar­ket Ceme­tery. Fam­ily will re­ceive friends one hour prior to the ser­vice. In lieu of flow­ers, me­mo­rial con­tri­bu­tions can be made to the Baraca Class, 501 Race St., Cam­bridge, MD 21613.
