CAMBRIDGE — The Eastern Shore Dance Academy celebrated the grand opening of its new dance studio at 3123 Aireys Way in Cambridge on Wednesday, Aug. 3.

Dorchester County Chamber of Commerce members joined the celebration by holding a ribbon cutting with Eastern Shore Dance Academy Director Jessica Hindman-Wheatley and her dancers.

The new 5,100-square-foot facility opened for classes Aug. 1 and offers three dance studios. Construction was done by Glenn Ruark Inc., and the architecture was completed by Crosby and Associates, both Dorchester County companies.

“This was my goal to have our own facility and have a nice place for the students here in the community,” Hindman-Wheatley said. “We want the students to have professional teaching. A lot of our dancers have gone on and become professionals. We have students from Dorchester, Caroline, Talbot and Queen Anne’s counties.”

Eastern Shore Dance Academy offers a variety of styles including Ballet, Jazz, Tap, Contemporary, Modern, Hip Hop, Acting, Cheer, Acrobatics and African. The academy has more than 200 girls in classes.

Miss Mar yland 2014 Jade Kenny, a 2009 Cambridge-South Dorchester High School graduate, is an alumni of Eastern Shore Dance Academy. Now a Washington Redskins cheerleader, Kenny returns to the academy to teach classes.

“A lot of our students have gotten scholarships,” Hindman-Wheatley said. “I feel like for the community it has been a really good thing. I was born and raised in Dorchester County, and I just knew that I wanted to make

sure that I gave back to the youth.

“I’m starting my 13th season and literally the first year I opened the studio, I was overwhelmed with the amount of support I had from the community,” she said. “We appreciate all the support from the community, and we are excited for a bright future.”

Dorchester County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Bill Christopher said the new facility is outstanding.

“This is awesome for the community,” he said. “Jessica does a great job for the kids. The Eastern Shore Dance Academy is always at local events doing outstanding performances. We are thrilled they have a place of their own in Dorchester County.”
