Federalsburg takes Hurlock Mayor Spratt challenge
FEDERALSBURG — Every town-owned vehicle in Federalsburg now has a rear bumper with a decal reading “In God We Trust,” after the mayor and council voted to take up another local mayor’s challenge to do so.
A total of about 30 vehicles, belonging to the town’s public works, code enforcement and police departments, have the decals, which debuted Monday, Aug. 1.
The decals, made by Signs by Willis in Federalsburg, are also available to any citizen who wants to put one on a vehicle. Anyone interested should call the Federalsburg Police Department at 410-754-8966.
Mayor Chuck Planner said the idea to apply the decals to town vehicles was brought up by a citizen at the town’s July 5 meeting.
The citizen had seen a Facebook post by Hurlock Mayor Joyce Spratt, announcing her decision to put similar decals on Hurlock’s town vehicles, and challenging other towns to do the same.
Spratt said she was inspired earlier this summer by a Texas town that had put the decals on its vehicles.
She said she was happy Federalsburg was the first town to take her up on the challenge.
“I lived in Federalsburg for 28 years, and I have a real love for the town,” Spratt said. “I’m glad Federalsburg was the first to step up.”
Planner said he and the town council unanimously voted to add the decals to town cars because it sends a good message.
“’In God We Trust’ is a generic message,” Planner said. “Each religion has its own symbolism. It’s meant for everybody. We want it to bring the community together.”
Federalsburg Police Chief Donald Nagel observed the phrase is already on U.S. currency.
Spratt said Hurlock residents can also get their own decals, for a $5 donation.
Spratt said Hurlock’s decals were donated by Hubbard Graphics of Seaford, Del., which asked the town to donate to a charity or organization that needs it. The town’s council has not yet decided where it will donate the proceeds from the decals, she said.
Hurlock police recently added “In God we trust” signs to patrol cars.
In early August, Federalsburg took up a challenge from Hurlock Mayor Joyce Spratt to place decals reading ‘In God We Trust’ on its town vehicles.
