IRONMAN Maryland seeks volunteers for annual event
CAMBRIDGE — IRONMAN Maryland will be held Saturday, Oct. 1, in Cambridge, and race organizers are seeking groups and individuals who want to volunteer during the event.
IRONMAN is a 2.4-mile swim and 112-mile bike ride, followed by a marathon, for a total of 140.3 miles, all to be completed in under 17 hours. Participants have to cross the finish line at Long Wharf on High Street before midnight.
More than 2,500 athletes from 48 states and 37 countries are registered for the fall event, ranging in age from 18 to 82. More than a dozen locals from the Eastern Shore will be competing.
More than 1,700 volunteers are needed to make the event a success.
During race week, which begins Tuesday, Sept. 27, volunteers are needed for athlete registration, at aid stations and as bike handlers.
