IRON­MAN Mary­land seeks vol­un­teers for an­nual event

CAM­BRIDGE — IRON­MAN Mary­land will be held Satur­day, Oct. 1, in Cam­bridge, and race or­ga­niz­ers are seek­ing groups and in­di­vid­u­als who want to vol­un­teer dur­ing the event.

IRON­MAN is a 2.4-mile swim and 112-mile bike ride, fol­lowed by a marathon, for a to­tal of 140.3 miles, all to be com­pleted in un­der 17 hours. Par­tic­i­pants have to cross the fin­ish line at Long Wharf on High Street be­fore mid­night.

More than 2,500 ath­letes from 48 states and 37 coun­tries are reg­is­tered for the fall event, rang­ing in age from 18 to 82. More than a dozen lo­cals from the Eastern Shore will be com­pet­ing.

More than 1,700 vol­un­teers are needed to make the event a suc­cess.

Dur­ing race week, which be­gins Tues­day, Sept. 27, vol­un­teers are needed for ath­lete reg­is­tra­tion, at aid sta­tions and as bike han­dlers.
