SOUTH CAROLINA — Nancy John­son Hughes passed away on Septem­ber 25, 2016 at McElveen Manor As­sisted Liv­ing. She moved to South Carolina five years ago and was a res­i­dent of Brook­dale As­sisted Liv­ing be­fore trans­fer­ring to McElveen Manor 11 months ago.

She was pre­ceded in death by her hus­band, Wil­liam Den­nis Hughes, who passed away in 2000. Born Nov. 9, 1921, at Aireys, MD, she was the daugh­ter of the late Maude Hunter Smith John­son and Ja­cob Ed­ward John­son. She was a mem­ber of Friend­ship United Methodist Church be­fore be­com­ing a mem­ber of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Cam­bridge.

Nancy was an avid reader and loved books. She en­joyed liv­ing in the East New Mar­ket Se­nior Apart­ments for 10 years be­fore mov­ing to South Carolina. She loved quilt­ing, sewing and crafts. Her fam­ily will en­joy the many home­made gifts and Christ­mas or­na­ments to come.

She is sur­vived by her four chil­dren: Ju­dith Hughes McMa­han and her hus­band Charles of East New Mar­ket, MD; Linda Hughes Nock and her hus­band Wil­liam of Sumter, SC; Wil­liam D. Hughes Jr. and his wife Su­san of Char­lotte, NC; and John H. Hughes and wife Mary of Cary, NC; four grand­chil­dren: Christo­pher W. Hughes; Su­san N. Clark and hus­band Scott; Melinda for gen­er­a­tions H. Leonard; and Mered­ith N. Par­tridge; three great grand­chil­dren: Anna Wal­lace Clark; Wil­liam Hunter Hughes Clark; and Nancy Ste­wart Par­tridge.

In ad­di­tion to her par­ents and hus­band, she was pre­ceded in death by her sib­lings: Annabelle Mowbray; Ros­alie Lind­ner; Ed­ward John­son; Bev­erly Cu­sick; Doris John­son; and Rus­sell John­son.

A fu­neral ser­vice will be held on Fri­day, Oc­to­ber 21, 11 a.m. at the Eastern Shore Veter­ans Ceme­tery, with Rev. Bon­nie Shively of­fi­ci­at­ing.
