Waiter braves the winter cold to provide for kids

Dorchester Star - - FRONT PAGE -

It wouldn’t be so bad in warmer weather, but Darren’s two-mile daily walk to work in winter often means braving a bitter cold wind chill. As a server in a local restaurant, Darren’s schedule changes as much as Eastern Shore weather.

It wouldn’t be so bad if he had extra cash on hand, but there’s nothing left after Darren buys food and shelter, clothing and day care and all of the incidentals that go into raising his own daughter as well as his late sister’s.

There is no extra cash, no car to cut the chill, and no Christmas for his girls. But there is a lot of love.

Darren is a caring dad to both his daughter and niece. When his sister, a single mother, was killed in a car crash, becoming his niece’s custodial parent was unexpected as well. But he wouldn’t trade her for the world.

Darren doesn’t want his girls to think that Santa forgot about them, but money is tight, and he was already struggling before his niece — now his daughter — came into his life. He wants to save enough to buy a car, but he can’t even afford to buy presents.
